According Southern Medicine Economics Institute (SMEI) under the SFDA, the top 100 Chinese pharmaceutical companies in 2006 had a total annual revenue of CNY 162.5 billion (US$20.8 billion), up by 10% compared with the same figure for top 100 in 2005.
The No.100th company had an annual revenue of CNY 557 million, up 16% compared with the same figure for 2005.
The 2006 revenues of the top 10 Chinese pharmaceutical companies accounted for 32.5% of the top 100 (slightly down from the previous year), while the top 50 accounted for 76.6% of the top 100 (up slightly).
Jiangsu province has the biggest number of top 100 enterprises at 13, followed by Zhejiang province and Shandong province.
There 16 multinational subsidiaries or joint ventures (one of them is a medical device company) and a HK-invested company in the top 100. Xian-Janssen is the largest foreign-invested pharmaceutical company in China ranked at No.13.
The share of new drug product sales in total sales is between 15% to 20% for top 100 Chinese pharmaceutical companies, while the industry average is about 5%, according to SMEI.
